What is a Clip?
A Clip represents a group of MIDI events or a waveform audio file. A clip is shown as a rectangle on the same "row" as the track in the Track View which owns the clip. A Clip's color matches its track's color. Clips scroll from right to left as playback progresses:

What is the Clip View?
The Clip View is the default view that appears to the right of the Track View and above the Tempo View. If you've selected any of the other views, you can always get back to the Clip View by using the Ctrl+1 shortcut.
The Clip View represents time in musical terms, that is, measures and beats:

Measure numbers are shown in the Clip View header. If there is a shortage of room to display all measure numbers "tic" marks are shown in place of some numbers (notice 262, 264, 266). If there is enough room for consecutive numbers, tic marks are used to show metronome beats (notice the 6/8 section has 2 beats per measure).
Vertical black lines appear whenever the meter or the number of beats per measure changes. A vertical red line always marks the current song position.
Cues are displayed in the space below the measure numbers.
What is the Time View?
The Time View is very similar to the Clip View, except that time is divided into minutes and seconds instead of measures and beats:

Use the default Ctrl+7 shortcut to get to this view. You might find this view useful when aligning waveform audio clips with MIDI clips, for example.
Can I edit events in these views?
Click and drag a clip to move it to a new position or a new track. To copy a note, hold the Shift key as you do this.
Multiple clips may be selected by drawing a selection rectangle. Select the Arrow toolbar icon, then click in the window (note one a clip) and move the cursor. Clips that overlap the rectangle will be selected. Additional clips may be added to the selection by holding the Shift key as you click on them or draw more selection rectangles. Clip selection may be "toggled" by using the Ctrl key instead of the Shift key. Your selection of multiple clips then may be moved (by clicking on any note and dragging) or copied (by holding the Shift key while clicking and dragging).
You can right-click on a clip, and select "Properties" to edit event properties for all events in the clip as a group.
By selecting the pencil icon in the toolbar, you can insert an event by clicking at the desired location in the Clip or Time view. Click with the pencil cursor in the space below the measure or time header to "draw" a cue.
Click and drag in the measure/time header to select time. |
